In Case You Missed It: UM Transportation Fair

by Wesley Gerard, Active Transportation Intern

On September 12, the University of Mississippi hosted its second Transportation Fair. TheIMG_3880.JPG fair was intended to promote sustainable transportation on and off campus by encouraging students to use bikes, carpools, or public transportation to get to school and around Oxford. The fair was organized by the Office of Sustainability and the Department of Parking and Transportation. The Office of Sustainability hosted a table encouraging students to sign “Share the Road” pledges and participate in “Bike Bingo,” which involved completing a certain number of educational activities around the fair, for a chance to win a commuter kit.

The Ole Miss Bike Shop was also represented, and staff gave students helpful tips on biking on campus and riding safely on the roads. The Transportation Fair also played host to Ole Miss’ first Ride O’ Rama, where attendees could try out bikes from the Ole Miss Bike Share program in a safe zone. Other means of public transportation were also highlighted, including an O.U.T. bus and three electric Flying Tuks, which offered free rides to students, faculty and staff!

In case you missed the fair, here’s a quick recap of sustainable modes of transportation available to the UM campus community:

  • OUT Bus system – This bus system has multiple stops on campus and in the Oxford community including apartment complexes, the Square and grocery stores. It is free for UM students, faculty and staff. For more information on bus routes, stops, and times, click here.
  • Bike rentals and sharing – The Ole Miss Bike Shop offers $30 bike rentals for a whole semester! Additionally, the Ole Miss Bikeshare allows any student to use shared bikes positioned around campus. UM students, faculty and staff can ride the bikeshare bikes for free for a maximum of two hours per day. • Zipcar car sharing – Zipcar is a program that allows UM students and employees to rent a car for certain periods of time from the Zipcar hub at Howry Hall! For more information about Zipcar at Ole Miss, click here.
  • Zimride ride sharing – Zimride is a ride sharing service that allows students to find other students to carpool and share rides with! Check out our guide on how to use Zimride and save money on your commute.
